London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony

Fri Jul 27 Olympic Stadium, Olympic Park, London, E20 2ST

Sheep, Maypole dancing, a troupe of NHS nurses? With Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle at the helm of a creative team that also includes filmmaker Stephen Daldry, the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony was always likely to be both pop-culturally impressive and pleasingly off-the-wall but we admit to being surprised when details of the July 27 ceremony were announced. Along with picnicking families and a village cricket team, livestock - including ten chickens, ten ducks, nine geese, 30 sheep, three cows and two goats - looks set to play a role in Boyle's pastoral vision for the ceremony, which also features real grass, rivers, an oak tree, a model of Glastonbury Tor and giant maypoles topped with a thistle, a leek, a rose and flax. Huge 'clouds' will be suspended above the stadium, one of which will supply rain should the weather fail to deliver a bona fide British atmosphere. Against this backdrop of a giant, surreal, village fête, the action begins with the ringing of a 27-tonne bell (Europe's largest, cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which has been inscribed with a quote from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' - 'Be not afeard, the isle is full of noises'). Exactly what will unfold during the three-hour ceremony, titled 'Isle of Wonder', is being kept under wraps but we know that things will get livelier - there will be two mosh pits, representing Glastonbury Festival and the Last Night of the Proms, allowing members of the public to get close to the musical action (details of ticket allocation for the mosh pits are to be announced). The 'hour of culture' will be followed by the traditional athletes parade and the raising of the Olympic flag, the lighting of the Olympic cauldron and a firework display. The Queen will be in attendance and Paul McCartney has confirmed that he will close the show.

Kristin Chenoweth, pictured in April in New York, was injured Wednesday but was seeking treatment at Bellevue Hospital on Thursday.

Actress Kristin Chenoweth got sprung from the hospital Thursday — a day after she was clocked by falling lighting equipment on a Brooklyn soundstage.

“Kristin has been released from the hospital and is home recovering,” her flak, Jill Fritzo, said in a statement. “She thanks everyone for their prayers and well wishes.”
Shortly before being discharged from Bellevue Hospital, Chenoweth was seen in the Intensive Care Unit sporting a neck brace and moving gingerly.
The award-winning actress was seen smiling as she climbed out of bed on her own and — dressed in a blue hospital gown — made it to a chair with the help of a male visitor.
The feisty 43-year-old actress appeared upbeat as they chatted.
Just a day earlier, the blond spitfire was “knocked out cold” on the set of the CBS drama “The Good Wife.”
“A gust of wind blew a lighting silk out of place striking actress Kristin Chenoweth,” the studio said in a statement.

Lighting silk is fabric used to soften or deflect artificial light or sunlight during shooting.
Paramedics who responded to the Williamsburg studio around 5 p.m. took Chenoweth out strapped to a gurney.
A short time later, “The Good Wife” star Josh Charles was seen racing over to Bellevue to visit his co-star.
Chenoweth, who won a Tony Award for her role in Broadway’s “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and an Emmy Award for her work on “Pushing Daisies,” has been banged-up before on the job.
In 2006, Chenoweth suffered bumps and bruises when she spilled off the stage during a rehearsal of the Broadway revival “The Apple Tree.”
Last year, Chenoweth also injured her back on the set of “Glee” when she fell down a flight of concrete stairs.

Eddie Murphy Dead… Again… On Twitter

eddie murphy

Twitter is running out of celebrities to kill. The microblogging site already sent out Eddie Murphy death hoax rumors earlier this year, and today, they tried to kill him again.

According to the Global Associated News, Eddie Murphy was vacationing in Zermatt, Switzerland with his family. The “novice snowboarder” apparently lost control and hit a tree. Eddie was airlifted to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Of course, these death hoaxes aren’t usually started on Twitter. The story usually starts on a site like Global Associated News or Media Fetcher. In this case, GAN published a story claiming that Eddie Murphy passed away while snowboarding in Switzerland.
Of course, none of that happened.
And man, the Global News Network is really getting lazy. Last February the site published a report stating that Eddie Murphy died in, you guessed it, a snowboarding accident. Where? Yep, at Zermatt, Switzerland. How? Wouldn’t you know it, by hitting a tree.
The Global Associated News writes:
“Actor Eddie Murphy is reported to have died shortly after a snowboard accident earlier today - February 3, 2012. The actor & novice snowboarder was vacationing at the Zermatt ski resort in Zermatt, Switzerland with family and friends. Witnesses indicate that Eddie Murphy lost control of his snowboard and struck a tree at a high rate of speed.”
Eddie Murphy death rumors are getting pretty common, but he’s not the only celebrity to meet his fake death this year. UsherVanilla IceJames BluntPaul McCartney, Mr. BeanReba McEntireAdam SandlerRobin Williams and well, Eddie Murphy have all met their death at least once this year.

There’s been plenty of buzz surrounding Detroit Tigers pitching ace Justin Verlander and Sports Illustrated 2012 Swimsuit issue cover model Kate Upton after the two have been spotted together at metro Detroit establishments over the past week.
Verlander, 29, who will be the starting pitcher for the American League at tonight’s Major League All Star Game, and Upton, 20, who was born in St. Joseph but spent the majority of her childhood in Florida, haven’t commented publicly on the topic. Earlier this year, the pair starred in two commercials promoting the “MLB 2K12” video game and its $1 million perfect game challenge.
Warren’s Amanda Waynick, who said she stopped by Coyote Joe’s in Shelby Township on Thursday to celebrate her 25th birthday, immediately noticed Verlander at the club.
“I went up to him, told him it was my birthday and that he was my Tiger and asked if he would take a picture with me,” Waynick told Names & Faces Tuesday. “He laughed, kind of walked by me, but he said no.
“I was like, ‘OK, fine, I don’t want a picture with you anyway.’ And he laughed at that, too.”
She didn’t recognize Upton, who was in the same group of about five with Verlander. Despite that, she did get her to pose for a photo, and a friend told her who it was on Sunday.
“She said happy birthday, posed for the picture, and that was really it,” she added.
"My mom always asks me if I’ve ever met (Verlander). Well, I did. But now I have to find a new Tiger as he turned me down,” she said, laughing. “(Doug) Fister’s looking pretty good now.”
Waynick first shared her story earlier today on WDZH-FM (98.7)’s “Buck and Coop Show,” which posted on the station’s website a photo that Waynick said showed Verlander and Upton together, though the photo was taken from a distance, and the subjects are obscured.
According to various published stories online and a string of Twitter comments, Verlander and Upton were spotted around metro Detroit over the weekend, including at Thursday’s Aerosmith concert at the Palace of Auburn Hills, and even made an appearance at Birmingham hot spot South Bar.
Upton also tweeted that she was was at Friday’s Tigers game.
Calls and e-mails to Coyote Joe’s, South Bar and Upton’s management weren’t immediately returned.
Verlander has had a longtime girlfriend, Emily Yuen, of whom he told Men's Journal in April: "She's the one, but I'm not ready."

Kourtney Kardashian, Scott Disick Welcome a Baby Girl! And Her Name Is...

by Gina Serpe and Ken Baker

Look out, world: there's an adorable new Kardashian to keep up with now!
Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick have welcomed their second child—and first daughter—E! News has exclusively learned.
The baby girl was born early Sunday in Los Angeles at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and joins big brotherMason in the ever-expanding Kardashian-Disick household. So how did the birth go down? And, most importantly, what's the cutie pie's name?

Let's say hello to Penelope Scotland Disick.
"Scott and I are overjoyed to welcome our precious angel Penelope Scotland Disick into our lives. We are forever blessed. Mommy and baby are resting comfortably," Kourtney tells E! News.
The 33-year-old E! star had an all-natural birth, and her new mini-me tipped the scales at 7 pounds, 14 ounces.
"It was a great. She had an easy delivery," matriarch Kris Jenner tells us. "[Penelope] is so cute. She looks just like Mason. She's so beautiful. We are so happy."
As it happens, this has been one highly anticipated birth (complete with a headline-grabbing false alarm), and not just among the fans.
Kourtney and Scott announced the news of the impending stork delivery last November, and revealed that they were expecting their first daughter in February of this year (son Mason turned the big 0-2 in December).

In May, the family—along with Kim Kardashian's beau, Kanye West—celebrated the baby-to-be with a femme-fueled, pink-themed baby shower.
As for the million-dollar question: as Mason's birth was must-see TV, are the proud new parents going to once again share with fans the miracle of life?
"I don't know," Kourtney said on the Tonight Show a few weeks ago. "We're gonna film it again ourselves, and honestly, my experience last time was so peaceful and calm and everything you don't see in the movies. And I really wanted to share that with people so they knew it doesn't have to be a crazy screaming session."
This time around, we'll have to wait and see. While Kourtney said she and Scott planned on filming the birth, they would decide after the fact if they were going to go public with the footage. And something tells us that's not their biggest priority at the moment.
Congrats, you two!

Usher and former wife Tameka Raymond pose for photos with their children, including Kyle Glover.

Usher's celebrity pals showed an outpour of support on Twitter following the singer's terrible tragedy this past weekend.

The singer's 11-year-old stepson Kyle Glover has been declared brain dead after he and a 15-year-old gal pal were admitted to a hospital following a boating accident Friday, TMZ reports.
The pair were floating on inner tubes in Georgia's Lake Lanier Friday when a Jet Ski struck the two youngsters.
Glover, whose mother is Usher's ex-wife Tameka Foster, was reportedly struck in the head and was knocked unconscious, according to Department of Natural Resources Sergeant Mike Burgamy.
The girl also suffered serious injuries.
Both children were immediately air-lifted to Children's Healthcare at Egelston Hospital in Atlanta.
"Everyone PLEASE pray for Usher and Tameka's son! This is the time they really need your prayers," singer Fantasia tweeted Saturday.
"Praying that Usher and Tameka's son is ok..." Russell Simmons added.
The cause of the horrific incident is still under investigation, which could take months to complete, according to TMZ.
So far, officials have ruled out alcohol as a factor in the accident, but Robin Hill, a rep for the Department of Natural Resources (Wildlife Resources Division) tells the site that they will recreate the accident using special computer programs to determine the details.
Based on the results, Usher could choose to press charges over the accident.
TMZ reports that despite their ongoing bitter divorce battle, Usher hired a private jet to bring Foster to her injured son.
The former couple have two children together - Usher Raymond V, 4, and Naviyd, 3.

Steve Nash joining Kobe Bryant as an L.A. Laker

PHOENIX — Steve Nash is going to the Los Angeles Lakers, a Pacific Division rival the two-time MVP point guard tried so hard to beat, with little success, in his eight seasons with the Phoenix Suns.
At Nash’s request, the Lakers and Suns reached a sign-and-trade deal, with Los Angeles using the trade exception it got when it sent Lamar Odom to Dallas to facilitate the transaction.
The 38-year-old Nash, who spent the past eight seasons with the Suns, was a free agent but a sign-and-trade agreement was necessary for the Lakers to afford him. He agreed to a three-year, $27 million contract.
In return, the Suns get four draft picks — first rounders in 2013 and 2015 and second rounders in 2013 and 2014.
Nash’s agent Bill Duffy said the deal was finalized Wednesday about 6 p.m. PDT.
In a statement released by the agent, Nash said that after he and the Suns agreed to part ways, he re-approached them to ask to pursue a sign-and-trade deal with Los Angeles “because it is very important to me to stay near my children and family,” who live in Phoenix.
“They were very apprehensive and didn’t want to do it,” Nash said.
“Fortunately for me, they reconsidered. They saw that they were able to get assets for their team that will make them better, assets they would not have otherwise had and it made sense for them to do a deal that helps their team get better.”
There had been sign-and-trade talks with New York and a lucrative free agent offer from Toronto.
The deal will put Nash on the floor with the team he tried so hard to unseat as a Western Conference power, teaming him with Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum and at least for now, Pau Gasol.
The Suns at least get something in the loss of their longtime leader and one of the city’s most popular athletes, although no one to help immediately, unless some or all of the picks are used in future trades.
Nash’s Phoenix teammate Jared Dudley tweeted that Nash “has not only been the best but the most unselfish player I ever played with. I only wish him the best. He deserves everything.
“Steve Nash has made many players millions. Only fitting to trade to a team that has a chance to win the ship and pay what he deserves.”
Nash has never made it to the NBA Finals. He was last in the Western Conference finals against the Lakers in 2010, when the Suns lost in six games and Los Angeles went on to win the NBA title.
The Suns drafted Nash in 1998 but traded him to Dallas after two seasons because Phoenix already had Kevin Johnson and Jason Kidd at the position. Nash played six seasons for Dallas but bolted when owner Mark Cuban declined to spend big money to keep him. Then-Suns owner Jerry Colangelo brought a plane load of team players and officials to Dallas to woo Nash.
Nash thrived in Mike D’Antoni’s run-and-gun system, earning MVP honours in 2005, when he averaged 15.5 points and 11.5 assists, and in 2007, when he averaged a career-high 18.8 points and 10.5 assists.
Nash averaged fewer than 10 assists only once, 9.7 in 2008-09, and topped 11 per game five times in his eight years with Phoenix.
Despite his age and the fact his team failed to make the playoffs for the second year in a row, Nash was second in the NBA in assists last season at 10.7 and averaged 12.7 points. His 53-per-cent shooting rate was a career high.
He is one of the most accurate free-throw shooters in NBA history at 90.4 per cent. His 9,916 assists rank him fifth in NBA history behind, in order, John Stockton, Kidd, Mark Jackson and Magic Johnson.
The Suns resisted trading Nash during his final season and insisted they were interested in bringing him back, but they never seriously were in the discussion. Toronto and New York dominated the talk until the Lakers came on with a flash on Tuesday.
Nash’s arrival should rejuvenate the Lakers, who lost in the second round for the second straight postseason after their back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010.
The Lakers struggled to move from departed coach Phil Jackson’s triangle offence to new coach Mike Brown’s system during the lockout-shortened season.
Nash’s peerless playmaking abilities and veteran presence could smooth over those problems, particularly after a full training camp to define the Lakers’ roles in Brown’s offence. Los Angeles hasn’t had an elite point guard alongside Bryant for several seasons, failing to address Derek Fisher’s gradual decline while the rest of the West got better.
The draft picks probably don’t mean too much to the Lakers, who have traded their first-round picks the past three seasons. They haven’t drafted a regular starter since 2005.
Nash’s move could see him line up with fellow British Columbian Rob Sacre, the graduate of Handsworth Secondary in North Vancouver, who was chosen 60th overall by the Lakers in last week’s draft. Sacre was the first B.C.-raised NBA pick since Nash went 15th overall to Phoenix in 1996.
